How to Make a Hallway Sign

Howdy!  Just thought I’d show you how I took the following items…… 3 plant brackets,  3 plaques from Walmart, and 3 cup hooks…………………

How to Make a hanging sign

and turned them into this….

How to make an office sign

I saw this pic from Destiny, @a place for us.. and was inspired to make my own for my hallway….

Okay…here we go!

I already had the plant brackets, so they were free, but you could pick some up in any garden section of your dept store.

plant brackets

These little wooden, oval plaques are literally just .97 each at Walmart…I bought three.  I put the cup hooks on the top center of each one.

Here’s a up close shot…see, I just put it right in the middle of the top edge…..

Just make sure whatever plant bracket you get, that the plaque will hang in the space under it without touching the bracket. You don’t want it to hang crooked…

I gave my naked plaques an antiqued finish by first applying a coat of creamy colored paint, then I put dark brown just around the edges.  Then I gave it one more light spray of cream just in the center.  After they dried really well,  I sanded them down a little and this is what I got……

How to antique

I used my Cricut to cut out some vinyl words, but you could use rub on letters from your scrap booking section of a store. You can also find places all over the web that will cut words for you. Shelley, from House of Smiths, has a great selection of word wall stuff, and I’m sure she would do special order words.
Here are the words I cut

and Laundry……

I put the vinyl lettering on both sides so you can see it either way you’re going down the hallway.  I made sure to buy a plaque that was double sided too….meaning it had the finished grooved edge on both sides.

So what do you think?  (the office also doubles as my hubbies drum room…hence the drum décor on the door) :0)

I thought the signs gave it some extra punch, and now when we have company, I don’t have to feel like I’m playing “Let’s Make a Deal” while I’m telling them the bathroom is behind door number 4~! Ha!

Hope you all are having a wonderful week! We’ve all been sick all week long, so we’re finally feeling like we’re back in the land of the living!

OH..by the way, this project cost me just $3.00 cause I had the brackets, paint and cuphooks……..so all I was out was the three little plaques.  I thought that was a lot of bang for my three bucks!

Blessings

Missy

EDIT: I’ve had several people ask me what cartridge I used on my Cricut, but I actually used Sure Cuts a Lot software that was compatible with my Cricut, so I didn’t use a cartridge at all.  You can Google the software, but it does take a little computer knowledge to get it up and going.   One of my readers said she has researched it and the newer software from them isn’t compatible with Cricut anymore, so you might want to look for the older stuff if you’re interested in it at all.
OH..and one more thing, I put a little dab of hot glue on the plant bracket where the cup hook sits, when I hung up the sign….so it wouldn’t swing around and would be stable.  :0)

  1. OH Missy, what a great idea! Did you use spray paint? This is something I would love to do but it might be just a bit too much for our tiny dark hallway. Love it any way and plan to keep it for future reference!!

  2. ohhh Missy--your hall is sooo darn cute! Adding door headers were great, but the signs add so much charm! That being said, I think the signs would look downright silly in my tiny hall with regular ole door frames!
    way to go girl!

  5. So cute!! Much better than me saying the first door on the right--I think I have some brackets, paint, and if I'm lucky I could find cuphooks in a junque drawer downstairs! The trip to town will be my hang-up! Ha. Not going today, it's nice and cool so I'm working outside. But will have to put the plaques on my list!♥♫

  18. I did something similar, but instead of using a Cricut, (which I don't have) I just printed the letters(after reversing them on the computer) on waxed paper, taped to a regular sheet so it could go through the print normally.

  23. Nice! My first thought was that if you made a bathroom one you'd never have to tell visitors where to go, and then I see you made one for that room, too! They fit very well with your decor, love it!

  32. Saw someone else ask this...do you sell them? Or would you consider just selling wood piece with word and I can get my own bracket? Please email me kellster17@aol.com
    Thanks.

  33. I'm in the middle of doing these...I used a creamy butter color craft acrylic paint and just put it on with a sponge brush. I bought stencils and did the lettering, using a pencil to trace, then went over the pencil with a black paint pen. I'm naming my rooms: the master bedroom is "Master and Mistress", the guest room is "The Lighthouse Room" , then I have "The Children's Room" (for grandkids), "Office" and I'm trying to think of a clever name for the bathroom. Having a little trouble finding the perfect brackets for hanging but I'll keep looking! Thanks for this awesome idea!

  35. I really want to try to make these but have been completely unsuccessful locating the wood plaques! I have tried both Walmarts in my town, Joannes in 2 cities, the local craft store and have come up blank. All the plaques I find are only one sided!

Any idea where else I can get these?

    Thanks!

  36. Have you tried looking on Walmart.com and having them shipped to your store for free? I do that a lot with some of the things they have online.

  44. The signs are too cute, but what caught my eye was the texture on your ceiling! Is that wallpaper or how did you get that pattern if it was mud? Thanks so much!

I'm in the middle of a remodel and I'm going to do what you did with the crown molding over the doors! Love it! Thanks for sharing.

  45. Wow! Love your hallway signs! My one little hallway in my 50's ranch home probably wouldn't look good with hallway signs (too small) but I love it iny your home! I bought a cricut expression machine in 2010 and rarely used it. Don't want to spend money on all those cartridges. Maybe I'll use it one day. I heard you can now get free stuff for it in craftroom. Maybe I'll sell it on ebay (if anyone would buy it) and get a sillhouette. Do you still use yours? I love the headers aborve your doors. That might work in my home.
