Vacation Fun!

Hey my best bloggin' buddies, I am back from vacation and feeling relaxed and revived...
well, until I looked at the pile of laundry we brought back with us....ewwwww, that stuff never ends!
Back to reality!

I wanted to share some of our trip with you in pictures.
:-)

We had a great time visiting South Carolina.
We went to Patriot Point for military stuff for my guys (had to get something educational in there for my homeschooling 9 year old!)
Then we went to the historic downtown Charleston and took something like a thousand pictures! :-o Then on to Folly Beach where we frolicked and just had fun!

It's probably going to take me a couple of posts to get all the photos of everything in here, so be patient with me.
:-)

Let's start out with our trip to Patriot's Point in South Carolina.

We started out by going to the USS Yorktown, which is an
aircraft carrier that was used in WWII.

I took this picture from the parking lot.
:)

My two guys walking to the ship, Carson was hanging with me!

REALLY HUGE!!

The bow of the ship....
I LOVE this picture!
Looks like artwork Layla would use in one of her seaside decorating cottages~!
Love you Layla! :0)

They had EVERYTHING on this ship....
even a dentist office!
I guess you have to have all essentials when you're out to sea.

Carson was checking out the chair...
we threatened to use some of their dentist tools on him,
but he didn't think it was a good idea! LOL

This was the kitchen on board the USS Yorktown.
How would you gals like to clean that kitchen after dinner!!?

This is the ingredients for ONE batch of cookies for the ship...
10,000 cookies a day.
It's a wonder any of those guys could walk...I'd be waddling!
Guess there were a LOT of guys. :)

On deck, the boys were checking out the big guns!

Back inside again, they even had some memorabilia from the Titanic.

TJ loved this...(he's a drummer too! Robyn & Patty, your guys will like this too!)
This was the drum from the youngest medal of honor award recipient ever.
He was William "Willie" Johnston....age 12.
During a disastrous retreat from the Peninsula campaign, from June 25-July 1, 1862....
when strong men were throwing away equipment to lighten their loads in battle,
Willie Johnston held onto his drum and was the ONLY drummer to bring his instrument off the battlefield.
President Lincoln got wind of what happened and recommended him to receive a medal of honor.
Now, isn't that bravest 12 year old in history!

This is kind of hard to read, but it says Walter Thorn...born in New York.
Our last name is Thorn and my hubby's family on his dad's side is from NY,
so we were thinking this guy might be family!
Wouldn't that be nice to know and really cool!

A plaque and pic talking about the Yorktown.

From the Yorktown we went to Fort Sumpter!
We rode this to get to the Fort....

It was a 25 minute boat ride out to the fort.

As our GPS would say,
you've reached your destination....on right.
:)

We learned that when Fort Sumpter was finished in 1860, it was
5 stories high.
This is the spot where the Civil War began.

You can see here in the mock up that it was 5 stories high and is
in the shape of a pentagon.

This is the flag that was flying over the fort when the first shots were fired.

This is one of the corners of the fort..
1 point of the pentagon shape.
These bricks are 150 years old....
just amazing!
So cool to be able to touch history!

View from a cannon port.

The sign we passed on the way in and out.

This was our first day in SC.
I'll be posting pics of historic downtown next, so stay tuned!!

Have a great day ya'll!
:)

Missy,

Welcome home. Thanks for sharing the photos of your vacation with us. Gives us the opportunity to go places we've never been! Looking forward to seeing more. I think everyone needs a vacation after a vacation to rest and catch up on tending to life's details (laundry).

Your Friend,
Deborah
