Window Seat Begins…

The chaos has begun and the work has started on my built-in window seat!

I did some figuring and got all the measurements for everything I would need to make this….

how to build a window seat

I made a nice discovery! See those cabinets on each side of the window seat?  I found some pre-made bookcases from Ikea that will fit those areas almost perfectly, so I don’t have to build that part! woo hoo!

Here are the bookcases

The Billy bookcases were only $39.99 each and their dimensions are:
Width: 15 3/4 "
Depth: 11 "
Height: 79 1/2 "

They’re gonna work great! I will have to put a spacer on the left one by the wall, but I would have had to do that even if I had built the cabinets myself because the spaces on each side of the windows aren’t exactly the same.  We were REALLY blessed to find some Billy doors with glass fronts on clearance because they weren’t going to carry these particular doors anymore.   We got both door fronts for $68.00.  They look like this….
(sorry it’s blurry, I had to find one on the internet because I don’t have mine out yet)

I can’t wait to get everything going~!  I’ve been taking down curtains, pulling out baseboards and just getting ready to start some of the building.   I thought I’d show you the cabinets we found though…that was a real blessing!  MUCH less building for me!

I’m going to be putting in a ledger board next…that’s the board you screw to the wall to help hold the top of the window seat and to carry the weight that will be put on the seat.   Hopefully I’ll get to start on that one day this week.

Life is crazy busy around here as usual, but I’m still blessed as always! :0)

So what do you all think about my find….do you like them and have you ever used Billy bookcases from Ikea before?

Have a blessed day!
Missy

It was last night when I was thinking about you and all your great projects! Am glad to see that you found some bookcases AND doors! That means I'll get to see the finished project sooner! ;)

Windy weather here and almost all of the big snow drift has melted. We are getting ready to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday at school. Some of my kids thought that the Cat in the Hat door decoration WAS Dr. Seuss. Have to explain the difference between authors and characters this week. Have a great week.♥♫

I need that exact bookcase, but IKEA only teases you on their website. You can look, but you can't order. **Stomps feet**

Can't wait to see you're window seat!!

We don't have Ikea stores around here but I see lots of people buying things from them, so it, obviously looks like a great place to shop! Woohoo...one less thing you have to build and on sale, too! I like the glass doors.

We used Billy bookcases and modified them to make wall-to-wall library shelving in our home office. Like you, I thought we were going to have to build custom shelving, but the Billy measurements were close enough. We saved so much time and money, and the office looks really great!!

Using the Billys for the basis of your windowseat should work well. They're very basic and strong, and you can trim them out to look exactly how you want them to look. The white is a laminate finish, so consider getting one of the veneered finishes so you can paint them to match the rest of your windowseat.

We went through the exact same 'glass door' angst last year. I wanted to add some closed storage to the office and I looked for the glass doors that fit half of the Billy bookcase, but were discontinued. We had to settle for the full doors, and be glad that they had them in our color (black brown). It sounds like I should be really glad that we did then when we did, if the full glass doors are also discontinued now.
