Summer Memories

When I was little we lived on a farm.
If you live in the city, you don't know how dark it can get at night away from all those city lights...
let me tell you it can get really dark out in the country.
There's no light posts, no lit up signs, no headlights from cars every two seconds..
it's just plain dark.

I remember going outside on a warm summers evening and seeing that dark, dark night
lit up all around with hundreds of tiny glowing lights.
Fireflies, or lightnin' bugs as we called them, filled the air!
Catching those little bugs is a simple summer joy that can't be replaced by any tv show,
video game or dvd around.
I'm glad to say my son is learning to find joy in that simple summer pleasure.
:)

The chase...

The capture!
Look mom, I got one!

The wonder...
how do they light up like that?....

The incarceration!
:)

Trying to find more...

Shaking the bugs to make them
light up....
see the green light the camera captured
from the shake and the glow..

Look how many I got mom!

Then the realization if you keep them,
they will die...
Then knowing what you need to do..

Be free my little friends and fly...

Waving bye to your friends and
learning a valuable lesson...

All from a night of catching lightnin' bugs.
:-)

Have a blessed day
and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

Missy

Ahhhhh...that is so sweet! I am glad my boys learned that fun summer pastime as my grandchildren are doing now! I think it is a rite of childhood! Hope you are feeling better and enjoying this respite from the heat, if only for a couple of days! ~Hugs, Patti

SO sweet~ I just love fireflies! We get a lot of them at sunset by the lake, but not too much here at home. My grandkids are fascinated by them, too! Cute post! Hope you are feeling better!

It must be great to have real dark when there is so much light polution.
We don't have fireflies here in the UK. It sounds fab!

Angela.

Such sweet memories for you and wonderful memories in the making for your little guy. I have to admit this city girl winced a little at that bug on your sons finger. Hope your feeling better. Many blessings, Patty

This brought back so many memories of me and my 'PaPaw' when I was a little girl. He punched holes into the lid of an old mason jar and would take me outside at night to catch those little amazing 'bugs'. Just about the only bug that I'm not afraid of. lol I was always amazed at them and would stare at them for hours. Eventually, I too knew what I had to do...let them go. Thanks for helping me to remember this today.

Hugs,
Lee Laurie

Such a sweet post. Does anything say summer better than fire flies/lightening bugs?

Sorry to hear you were suffering last week and hope you are back to yourself now.

Your Friend,
Deborah

I see that you have raised your son to have a heart towards all of God's living creatures. I was so hoping that by the end of your post, he would release them. What a sweet story. We used to love doing this when I was a kid. ONe of my dogs loves to try to catch lightening bugs, with her mouth...which is not a good thing. We don't encourage it. I don't think that she's ever actually caught one.
sweet post
